Job Description
Join the British Red Cross in Peterborough as a Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support Intern. This entry-level, on-site internship offers a unique opportunity to provide vital humanitarian aid, support vulnerable individuals, and gain invaluable experience in the non-profit sector. Full training provided, no prior professional experience required.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the initial welcome and induction process for new refugees and asylum seekers.
- Provide administrative support to the refugee support team, including data entry and record keeping.
- Help individuals access vital services such as healthcare, education, and legal aid.
- Support the organisation of community events, workshops, and English language classes.
- Accompany clients to appointments, acting as a compassionate presence.
- Contribute to the creation of support materials and information resources.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance understanding of refugee issues and support best practices.
Required Skills
- Strong commitment to humanitarian principles and the mission of the British Red Cross
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and empathetic approach
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, email, internet)
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment
- No prior professional experience is required; full training will be provided
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in social work, international relations, human rights, law, public policy, or a related field
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to refugee communities (e.g., Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, Kurdish, Tigrinya, Ukrainian)
- Previous volunteer experience in a community support or non-profit setting
