Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Public Sculpture Conservator to join our Arts and Culture team. This pivotal role involves the assessment, treatment, and maintenance of the City’s diverse public sculpture collection. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing conservation strategies, ensuring the longevity and integrity of these valuable cultural assets. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in materials science, conservation ethics, and practical experience with a variety of sculptural materials.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct condition assessments and surveys of public sculpture throughout the City of Greater Geelong.
- Develop and implement conservation treatment plans in accordance with professional ethical standards.
- Perform hands-on conservation treatments, including cleaning, repair, consolidation, and protective coating application.
- Monitor environmental conditions and provide recommendations for preventive conservation measures.
- Maintain accurate and detailed conservation records, including photographic documentation and treatment reports.
- Liaise with artists, fabricators, and other stakeholders regarding public art projects and conservation needs.
- Manage conservation projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and contractor supervision.
- Advise on best practices for the installation, handling, and display of public sculptures.
- Contribute to public education and engagement initiatives related to art conservation.
Required Skills
- Tertiary qualification in Objects Conservation, Cultural Heritage Conservation, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in the conservation of outdoor sculptures and public artworks.
- Proficiency in the identification and treatment of various materials, including metals, stone, timber, and synthetic resins.
- Knowledge of conservation ethics, principles, and best practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate degree in Conservation.
- Experience with integrated pest management strategies for outdoor collections.
- Familiarity with OHS requirements for working with hazardous materials and at heights.
- Project management experience.
