Job Description

Howard County Government is looking for dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our team as Public Safety Telecommunicators. This is a critical, fast-paced role at the heart of emergency response, acting as the first point of contact for citizens in need. We provide comprehensive, full training, meaning no prior experience in dispatch or emergency services is required. Key Responsibilities
- Receive and evaluate incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls, determining the nature of the call and appropriate response.
- Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services personnel and equipment promptly and accurately.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in emergency situations.
- Monitor multiple radio channels simultaneously, maintaining constant communication with field units.
- Enter and retrieve critical data into computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and other databases.
- Maintain accurate records and logs of all calls and dispatched units.
- Assist field units by running inquiries, checking status, and relaying vital information.
- Maintain professionalism and composure in highly stressful situations.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 35 words per minute.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong active listening and comprehension abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under pressure.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry.
- Ability to multi-task effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Commitment to working rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a customer service or call center environment.
- Familiarity with the geography of Howard County.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish, Korean, or Mandarin).
- Current CPR and/or First Aid certification.
