Job Description
Are you passionate about plants and eager to start a career in horticulture but have no prior experience? Whyalla Green Oasis is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Nursery Assistant to join our friendly team! This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for individuals with a genuine interest in plants and a strong desire to learn. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training, so while a keen interest in plants is essential, previous experience is absolutely not required. You’ll be involved in the daily care of our diverse plant collection and assist customers in finding their perfect green companions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the watering, feeding, pruning, and general care of various plants, including indoor plants, outdoor shrubs, and trees.
- Help maintain a clean, tidy, and organized nursery environment, including sweeping, tidying displays, and restocking shelves.
- Provide friendly and helpful customer service, assisting visitors with plant selection, basic plant care advice, and locating products.
- Process sales transactions accurately using our point-of-sale system (training provided).
- Assist with receiving, unpacking, and merchandising new plant and product deliveries.
- Support the team with potting, repotting, and propagation tasks as needed.
- Ensure all plants are healthy, well-presented, and ready for sale.
Required Skills
- No prior experience in a nursery or horticulture is required – full training will be provided.
- A genuine passion and keen interest in plants, gardening, and the natural world.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills in plant care and nursery operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding or enthusiasm for local flora and climate.
- Previous experience in a customer service or retail environment (not essential, but a plus).
- A positive attitude and a proactive approach to tasks.
