Job Description
Are you passionate about working outdoors and creating beautiful green spaces? The City of Hagerstown Parks and Recreation is seeking a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Worker / Trainee Gardener to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals eager to learn and grow in a hands-on environment, regardless of prior experience. We provide full training and support for you to develop essential skills in grounds maintenance and horticulture. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the maintenance of city parks, athletic fields, public grounds, and other landscaped areas.
- Learn and perform basic gardening tasks including planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and pruning under supervision.
- Operate and maintain various groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and hand tools (training provided).
- Participate in seasonal duties such as leaf removal, snow removal, and preparing grounds for events.
- Conduct litter and debris removal to ensure cleanliness and safety of public spaces.
- Assist with minor repairs and upkeep of park amenities like benches, fences, and playgrounds.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures while performing duties.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve departmental goals.
Required Skills
- Physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn and take direction.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of safety protocols or willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Maryland Driver's License.
- Previous experience with outdoor labor or a strong interest in gardening/landscaping.
