Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Greenhouse / Horticulture Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of our cultivation facilities in Philadelphia. This is a critical role that involves managing plant production, leading a small team of horticulturists, and ensuring the health and vitality of our diverse plant collections. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in horticultural practices, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to PHS’s mission. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all aspects of greenhouse operations, including propagation, cultivation, watering, fertilization, and pest management programs.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of greenhouse technicians and volunteers, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Develop and implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain plant health and prevent disease outbreaks.
- Monitor environmental controls within the greenhouse, including temperature, humidity, and light levels, ensuring optimal growing conditions.
- Maintain accurate records of plant inventory, production cycles, and resource utilization.
- Collaborate with other PHS departments on plant procurement, display planning, and special projects.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best horticultural practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in greenhouse management or a related horticultural supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of plant physiology, propagation techniques, and pest and disease identification.
- Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team effectively.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping abilities.
- Proficiency in environmental control systems commonly used in greenhouses.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field.
- Pesticide applicator certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
- Experience with various irrigation systems and hydroponic/aeroponic growing techniques.
- Familiarity with urban agriculture principles and community greening initiatives.
