Job Description
We are seeking a talented and creative Exhibition Designer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, and execution of engaging and innovative exhibitions and gallery installations, as well as contributing to event design within our historic museum setting. This role requires a strong understanding of museology, spatial design, visitor experience, and the ability to translate curatorial vision into compelling physical spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop innovative design concepts for temporary and permanent exhibitions, ensuring alignment with curatorial objectives and institutional standards.
- Produce detailed design drawings, renderings, and specifications (including floor plans, elevations, material selections, and lighting plans) using CAD and 3D modeling software.
- Collaborate closely with curators, collections staff, educators, and facilities team throughout all phases of exhibition development and installation.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and external vendor relationships for fabrication, shipping, and installation.
- Oversee the safe and aesthetic installation and de-installation of exhibition components, artwork, and artifacts.
- Research and select appropriate materials, finishes, lighting, and display cases that meet conservation standards and design goals.
- Contribute to the design and layout for special events, fundraisers, and public programs held within the museum.
- Ensure all designs comply with accessibility standards (ADA) and building codes.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of exhibition design trends, materials, and technologies.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Strong portfolio demonstrating experience in exhibition, interior, or architectural design.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of museum conservation practices and artifact handling.
- Understanding of lighting design principles for cultural institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Exhibition Design, Museum Studies, Architecture, Interior Design, or related field.
- Experience with graphic design for interpretive panels and wayfinding.
- Familiarity with AV equipment integration in exhibition spaces.
- Experience working within a non-profit or cultural institution environment.
