Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Dairy Farm Herd Manager to oversee the health, welfare, and productivity of our dairy herd. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of our milking cows, young stock, and related facilities. This role involves implementing best practices in herd health, breeding, nutrition, and overall farm operations to ensure optimal performance and sustainability. This position offers support for individuals eligible for the Skilled Worker Route.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily management of the dairy herd, including feeding, milking, and animal welfare.
  • Implement and monitor breeding programs, including heat detection, AI, and record keeping.
  • Manage herd health, including preventative care, disease identification, and treatment protocols in consultation with veterinarians.
  • Supervise and train junior farm staff, ensuring adherence to safety and operational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of herd performance, health, breeding, and milk production.
  • Manage pasture rotation and feed inventory in coordination with farm management.
  • Operate and maintain farm equipment, ensuring all machinery is in good working order.
  • Adhere to all farm safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of farm practices and animal husbandry.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in dairy herd management.
  • Strong knowledge of animal health, nutrition, and breeding practices.
  • Ability to operate farm machinery and equipment safely.
  • Excellent observational skills for animal health and behavior.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record keeping.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Commitment to animal welfare and sustainable farming practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant agricultural qualification or degree.
  • Experience with modern milking systems and herd management software.
  • First Aid certification.
