Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Archivist Assistant to join our esteemed Special Collections team. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about history and cultural heritage to begin a career in archive management. You will play a crucial role in the daily operations of our archives, assisting with the care, cataloging, and accessibility of our unique collections. Full training will be provided to ensure you develop the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior archivists with the physical processing and arrangement of archival collections, including rehousing and labeling.
  • Perform basic cataloging and data entry tasks using the library's collection management systems.
  • Retrieve and refile archival materials for researchers and staff, ensuring proper handling and security protocols are followed.
  • Monitor environmental conditions in archival storage areas and report any issues.
  • Assist with the preparation of materials for digitization projects.
  • Support public service activities, including assisting researchers in the reading room and responding to basic inquiries.
  • Participate in conservation and preservation activities as directed.
  • Adhere to all departmental and institutional policies and procedures regarding collection management and security.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated interest in history, archives, or cultural heritage.
  • Physical ability to lift and move archival boxes (up to 15kg) and work with ladders when necessary.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and archival standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in History, Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field (or working towards one).
  • Previous experience in a library, archive, or museum setting (volunteer experience welcome).
  • Familiarity with archival description standards (e.g., ISAD(G)).
