Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Journalism Student for a placement in our Wollongong Digital Newsroom. This is a unique opportunity for students currently enrolled in a journalism or media-related degree to gain practical experience, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to real newsgathering and content creation. No prior professional experience is required; we are looking for individuals eager to learn and grow their skills in a fast-paced news environment. Full training and mentorship will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist journalists and producers with research for news stories and features.
  • Help gather information, conduct interviews (under supervision), and fact-check content.
  • Learn to write and edit short news pieces for digital platforms, adhering to ABC editorial standards.
  • Support the digital news team with content upload, scheduling, and basic social media management.
  • Observe and participate in daily news meetings and content planning sessions.
  • Contribute ideas for local stories relevant to the Wollongong and Illawarra region.
  • Undertake administrative tasks as required to support newsroom operations.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or higher in Journalism, Communications, Media, or a related field.
  • Strong passion for news and current affairs, particularly local issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of digital platforms and social media.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proactive attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with student media (e.g., university newspaper, radio, or online publication).
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS).
  • Basic knowledge of audio/video editing software.
  • Understanding of media ethics and legal considerations.
