Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Medical Officer to join our dynamic team within the Western Health and Social Care Trust in Derry. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a dedicated medical professional to contribute to patient care across various specialties. The Medical Officer will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients under the supervision of senior medical staff. This position requires a commitment to continuous professional development, excellent clinical skills, and a patient-first approach in a challenging yet rewarding healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking and physical examinations.
  • Formulate and implement appropriate treatment plans under the guidance of consultants.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, imaging, and ECGs.
  • Perform medical procedures relevant to the grade and competency.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical records.
  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and clinical governance activities.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Adhere to all relevant clinical guidelines, policies, and ethical standards.
  • Actively participate in departmental audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to junior medical staff and students as appropriate.

Required Skills

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical experience (equivalent to post-FY2 or higher).
  • Demonstrable experience in acute medical settings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to manage time and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Commitment to patient safety and quality improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant Royal College.
  • Experience in audit and quality improvement projects.
  • ALS (Advanced Life Support) certification.
  • Evidence of participation in teaching or training activities.
  • Specific experience in specialties relevant to the department.
