Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Livestock Health Assistant to join our regional support team in Bootle, Sefton. This vital role involves supporting our animal health inspectors and veterinarians in maintaining livestock health standards, responding to disease incidents, and ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations across the region. You will play a crucial part in protecting animal health and public safety, contributing to the UK’s biosecurity framework. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about animal welfare and public service, even without prior extensive experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist APHA inspectors and veterinarians during on-farm visits, including data collection and record-keeping.
  • Support the investigation and management of animal disease outbreaks, adhering to strict biosecurity protocols.
  • Help with the implementation of animal health and welfare policies and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of inspections, observations, and actions taken.
  • Liaise with farmers, livestock owners, and other stakeholders with professionalism and clarity.
  • Conduct administrative tasks to support regional operations, including scheduling and report preparation.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Operate and maintain specialist equipment safely and effectively.

Required Skills

  • A strong passion for animal health and welfare.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle (or ability to travel to rural locations) is essential.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including farm settings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with animals (e.g., farm work, veterinary assistant, animal care).
  • A relevant qualification in animal science, agriculture, veterinary nursing, or a related field (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3, BTEC, A-Levels).
  • Understanding of biosecurity principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of UK animal health and welfare legislation.
