Job Description

Leon County Public Safety Communications is seeking highly motivated and compassionate individuals to join our team as Emergency Call Handlers. In this high-impact role, you will be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emergencies, providing critical assistance and dispatching fire and ambulance services. This position involves shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, but offers immense personal reward and the opportunity to embark on a fulfilling public service career. Full comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you are equipped with all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls promptly and professionally.
- Gather critical information from callers to assess the nature and location of the emergency.
- Prioritize calls and dispatch appropriate fire and ambulance units with accuracy and speed.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers for medical emergencies, fire safety, and other critical situations.
- Maintain accurate records of all calls and dispatched units in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
- Communicate effectively with emergency personnel and other agencies.
- Remain calm and composed under pressure, often dealing with highly stressful situations.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Excellent verbal communication skills with a clear and concise speaking voice.
- Strong active listening skills and ability to extract critical information.
- Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in basic computer usage and data entry.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities and quick decision-making under stress.
- Strong sense of empathy, patience, and compassion.
- Reliability and strong work ethic, including punctuality for assigned shifts.
- Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or call center environment.
- Experience working in a public safety or emergency response setting.
- Familiarity with Leon County geography and landmarks.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
