Job Description

Are you passionate about environmental management and contributing to the beauty of public spaces? We are seeking a dedicated Weed Management Officer to join our Parks and Gardens team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the identification, control, and eradication of declared and environmental weeds across various council-managed parks, reserves, and natural areas within the Fraser Coast region. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining the ecological integrity and aesthetic appeal of our community’s treasured outdoor spaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of council parks, reserves, and public areas to identify and assess weed infestations.
  • Develop and implement effective weed control programs, utilizing a range of methods including chemical application, manual removal, and biological control.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including spray units, brush cutters, small machinery, and hand tools, safely and efficiently.
  • Prepare and mix herbicides in accordance with safety guidelines and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of weed control activities, including locations, methods used, and herbicide application rates.
  • Adhere to all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
  • Promote best practice weed management techniques and educate community members where appropriate.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing planning and improvement initiatives for parks and gardens.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks related to park upkeep as required.

Required Skills

  • Current Australian Chemical Users Permit (ACUP) or equivalent (e.g., ACDC Licence).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local weed species, their identification, and effective control methods.
  • Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of weed control equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor conditions.
  • Sound understanding of WHS regulations pertaining to chemical handling and outdoor work.
  • Current C-Class Australian Driver's Licence.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual labour, including lifting and repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate III in Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a similar role within local government or a related industry.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR qualification.
  • Knowledge of native plant species and ecological restoration principles.
