Job Description
Merewether High School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Lab Assistant to join our High School Department. This vital role supports our science educators and students by ensuring the smooth and safe operation of our science laboratories. You will be responsible for preparing experiments, maintaining equipment, managing chemical inventories, and assisting with practical lessons across various scientific disciplines including Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, a proactive approach, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and educational support. You will play a crucial part in providing an engaging and hands-on science learning experience for our students.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and set up laboratory experiments and demonstrations for various science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) as requested by teaching staff.
- Maintain, clean, and store laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments.
- Manage and monitor chemical and biological supplies, including ordering, stocktaking, and safe disposal of waste materials in accordance with WHS guidelines.
- Ensure all laboratory areas are clean, tidy, and safe for student use, including regular safety checks of equipment and facilities.
- Assist teachers and students during practical lessons, providing technical support and guidance as needed.
- Develop and update safety data sheets (SDS) and risk assessments for experiments.
- Provide basic first aid in the laboratory setting if required and ensure emergency procedures are followed.
- Assist with general administrative tasks related to the science department.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of laboratory safety protocols and WHS guidelines.
- Basic knowledge of scientific principles and laboratory techniques in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
- Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Skills or a related scientific discipline.
- Previous experience working in a school laboratory or educational setting.
- Experience with chemical inventory management systems.
- First Aid Certificate.
