Job Description

Are you passionate about food and eager to dive into the fascinating world of artisanal cheese? Thrifty Foods is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Artisan Cheesemonger Trainee to join our Saanich team. This is an incredible entry-level opportunity to learn the craft of cheesemongering and food affinage from the ground up. No prior experience is required – we will provide comprehensive training on everything from cheese varieties, pairing suggestions, proper handling, and the art of retail sales. You will work directly with our experienced team, assisting customers, managing inventory, and contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of our specialty food section.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undergo comprehensive training in all aspects of artisanal cheese, including varieties, origins, flavour profiles, and proper storage techniques.
  • Learn and practice food affinage techniques to mature and care for various cheeses.
  • Assist customers with cheese selections, offer tasting samples, and provide expert pairing recommendations for wine, beer, and other accompaniments.
  • Prepare cheese boards, platters, and custom orders with an eye for presentation.
  • Maintain a pristine and organized cheese counter, ensuring proper rotation and inventory management.
  • Adhere to all food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Contribute to a positive and knowledgeable customer service experience.

Required Skills

  • Eagerness and enthusiasm to learn about food, particularly cheese.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights (up to 20 kg).
  • Basic math skills for weighing and pricing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A genuine passion for food, culinary arts, or gourmet products.
  • Previous experience in a customer service or retail environment (any industry).
  • Basic understanding of food safety principles.
