Key Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency (000) calls promptly and professionally, providing a calm and reassuring presence.
  • Elicit essential and accurate information from callers quickly and efficiently, often in high-stress or emotional situations.
  • Assess the nature and urgency of incidents to determine the appropriate police response and resources required.
  • Dispatch police officers and other emergency services resources to incidents using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions and advice to callers, including critical first aid or safety guidance when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all calls, actions taken, and resources dispatched.
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with callers who may be distressed, angry, or confused.
  • Adhere strictly to Queensland Police Service policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with other emergency services agencies and internal departments as required.

Required Skills

  • No prior experience in emergency services required – full, comprehensive training will be provided.
  • Exceptional verbal communication and active listening skills, with clear and articulate speech.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in high-pressure and emotionally charged situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to think quickly on your feet.
  • Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn new software systems (e.g., CAD) rapidly.
  • High level of empathy, compassion, and resilience to handle challenging situations.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively, managing multiple information streams and tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Successful completion of required background checks and psychological assessments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a customer service role, call centre environment, or any role requiring high-volume communication.
  • Proficient typing speed and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with local geography and road networks in the Rockhampton region and wider Queensland.
