Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and proactive Recycling Education Officer to join our dedicated Environmental Services team. In this full-time role, you will be at the forefront of educating and engaging the diverse communities of East Gippsland on responsible waste management and recycling practices. You will develop and deliver engaging educational programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives to schools, community groups, and the general public, aiming to increase awareness, improve recycling rates, and foster sustainable behaviors throughout the Shire. This role requires excellent communication skills, a creative approach to education, and a genuine commitment to environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, plan, and deliver engaging educational presentations, workshops, and activities on waste reduction, reuse, and recycling for various community segments including schools, businesses, and community groups.
- Create and distribute a range of high-quality educational materials, including brochures, posters, social media content, and website updates, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
- Represent the Council at community events, markets, and festivals, actively engaging with residents to promote recycling programs and address queries.
- Provide clear and concise advice to residents and businesses on current recycling guidelines and waste sorting best practices specific to the East Gippsland region.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of educational initiatives, adapting strategies as needed to achieve program objectives.
- Collaborate with internal Council departments and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for improved waste management strategies and community engagement.
- Respond to community inquiries and concerns regarding recycling services, providing accurate information and fostering positive relationships.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of Council's waste management and sustainability strategies.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in community engagement, environmental education, or public outreach.
- Demonstrated strong public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
- Sound knowledge of waste management principles, recycling processes, and environmental sustainability concepts.
- Proven ability to develop creative, informative, and accessible educational materials.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Current Australian Driver's License and willingness to travel within the East Gippsland Shire.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Education, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Previous experience working within local government or a not-for-profit environmental organisation.
- Experience in managing or contributing to social media campaigns for educational or public awareness purposes.
- Knowledge of local East Gippsland community demographics and environmental priorities.
