Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous individual to join our team in Alice Springs as a Public Sector Finance Accountant. This role is essential for maintaining the financial integrity and stability of government operations through accurate and timely accounting practices. You will be responsible for a range of financial duties, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and accounting standards within the public sector framework. This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the financial health of the Northern Territory Government, providing a stable and rewarding career path in public finance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process financial transactions, including general ledger entries, journal adjustments, and reconciliations.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and reports in accordance with relevant accounting standards and government requirements.
  • Monitor budget allocations and expenditures, identifying variances and contributing to budget management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and statutory obligations (e.g., GST, FBT).
  • Participate in month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Provide financial advice and support to internal stakeholders.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records and documentation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in an accounting role, preferably within a large organisation.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (AASB/IFRS) and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or CA designation (or actively working towards).
  • Experience working within the Australian public sector or a government agency.
  • Familiarity with financial systems used by the Northern Territory Government.
  • Knowledge of public sector finance legislation and frameworks.
