Job Description

The Virgin Islands Public Transit Authority is seeking motivated and detail-oriented individuals to join our team as Trainee Train Dispatchers. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for candidates eager to begin a career in public transportation, even without prior experience. As a Trainee, you will undergo an intensive, structured training program designed to equip you with all the necessary knowledge and skills to manage and control train movements safely and efficiently across our expanding network. You will learn the intricacies of railway operations, safety protocols, and communication systems, all while contributing to the smooth flow of transit for the residents and visitors of St. Thomas. Upon successful completion of the training program, you will transition into a full-fledged Train Dispatcher role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all aspects of the comprehensive training program.
  • Learn to monitor train movements and track conditions using advanced dispatching systems.
  • Develop proficiency in issuing directives and clearances to train operators.
  • Understand and apply railway operating rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
  • Practice effective communication with train crews, maintenance personnel, and other dispatchers.
  • Assist in documenting and reporting incidents, delays, and other operational events.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety and operational excellence throughout training.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to remain focused for extended periods.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new technologies and procedures.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a relevant field (e.g., transportation, logistics, public safety).
  • Previous experience in a role requiring high concentration or critical decision-making.
  • Familiarity with the geography of St. Thomas.
