Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Virtual Legal Aide to join our team, working remotely from any location within New York State. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to public service and gain invaluable experience in the legal field without needing prior experience. As a Virtual Legal Aide, you will provide essential administrative and legal support to our Public Defenders, assisting in the preparation of cases, managing documentation, and ensuring the smooth operation of our remote legal services. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate, making this an ideal entry point for individuals passionate about law and justice.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Public Defenders with case preparation, including organizing discovery materials and compiling legal documents.
- Draft and format legal correspondence, motions, and other court documents under attorney supervision.
- Conduct basic legal research using online databases and other resources to support case arguments.
- Maintain and update client files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of all sensitive information.
- Schedule appointments, manage calendars, and coordinate virtual meetings for attorneys and clients.
- Communicate professionally with clients, court personnel, and external agencies via phone and email.
- Transcribe dictations and prepare summaries of legal proceedings or interviews.
- Perform general administrative tasks to support the efficient operation of the virtual office.
Required Skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote environment.
- High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
- Basic understanding of legal terminology or a strong willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
