Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Health Physics Specialist to join our team in Akron, Ohio. This vital role involves ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment across our healthcare facilities. The Health Physics Specialist will be responsible for implementing and maintaining radiation safety programs, conducting surveys, calibrating equipment, and providing essential training to staff. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct radiation safety surveys, audits, and compliance inspections of clinical and research areas.
- Perform calibration and maintenance of radiation detection equipment and dosimeters.
- Develop and deliver radiation safety training programs for medical staff, researchers, and other personnel.
- Assist in the management and disposal of radioactive waste in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
- Investigate incidents involving radiation exposure and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of radiation safety activities, including dosimetry, inventory, and equipment calibration.
- Collaborate with medical physicists, oncologists, and other departments to ensure adherence to ALARA principles.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Medical Physics, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of radiation physics principles and radiation protection regulations.
- Ability to operate and interpret readings from radiation detection and measurement equipment.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication, including technical report writing.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Health Physics or Medical Physics.
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or working towards certification.
- Experience in a healthcare or research setting with radioactive materials.
- Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to radiation safety (e.g., NRC, EPA, DOT).
