Job Description

Are you passionate about history and eager to bring the past to life? McLean Mill National Historic Site is seeking a Historical Reenactment & Interpretation Intern to join our dynamic team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in historical interpretation, reenactment, and visitor engagement within a living museum setting. You will learn the principles of historical research, costume development, character portrayal, and effective storytelling to educate and entertain our diverse audience. This is an ideal position for individuals looking to start a career in heritage, museums, or public history, with full training provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with historical research to ensure accuracy in interpretations and reenactments.
  • Participate in daily historical reenactments, portraying various characters from the early 20th-century logging community.
  • Engage visitors through interactive interpretive programs, sharing stories and historical facts about McLean Mill.
  • Learn and utilize period-appropriate tools, equipment, and daily routines relevant to the site's history.
  • Support the development of new interpretive materials and educational programs.
  • Assist with costume maintenance and prop management for reenactment activities.
  • Collaborate with staff on special events and historical demonstrations.
  • Provide exceptional visitor service, answering questions and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in history, particularly Canadian industrial and social history.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive attitude.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and interacting with diverse groups of people.
  • Willingness to wear historical costumes and participate in outdoor activities in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in History, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Education, Theatre, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer or work experience in a museum, heritage site, or educational setting (not mandatory, but a plus).
  • Basic understanding of research methodologies.
