Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our growing team as a Farriers Mate. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for someone passionate about horses and keen to learn the skilled trade of farriery. As a Farriers Mate, you will work directly alongside our qualified farriers, providing essential support in all aspects of their daily work. This hands-on role requires a strong work ethic, physical fitness, and a genuine interest in equine welfare. Full training will be provided, making this an ideal stepping stone for a rewarding career in farriery.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist qualified farriers with all aspects of their work, including handling horses safely during examinations and shoeing.
- Prepare and organise farriery tools, equipment, and materials for each appointment.
- Clean and maintain tools, mobile workshop, and designated work areas.
- Manage inventory of supplies and assist with reordering when necessary.
- Support administrative tasks such as scheduling, record-keeping, and client communication as required.
- Learn and understand various farriery techniques, horse anatomy, and hoof health.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations at all times.
- Travel with the farrier to various client locations across the North East of Scotland.
Required Skills
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and efficiently.
- Comfortable and confident working around horses of various temperaments.
- Good level of physical fitness, capable of lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- A full, clean UK driving license is essential for this role.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Eagerness to learn and develop new skills in a practical environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous basic experience or knowledge of equine care, husbandry, or handling.
- Experience in manual labour or a physically demanding role.
- Basic first aid certification (equine or general).
- Own reliable transport to commute to our base location (company vehicle provided for travel to clients).
