Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Ichthyology & Aquarium Maintenance Intern to join our team. This entry-level internship offers an invaluable opportunity for individuals passionate about marine biology, ichthyology, and aquatic systems to gain practical experience. The intern will work closely with our faculty and research staff, assisting with the daily care and maintenance of our aquatic exhibits and research tanks. Full training will be provided to ensure the intern develops a comprehensive understanding of proper aquarium husbandry, water quality management, and basic ichthyological principles. This is a hands-on role perfect for someone looking to jumpstart their career in aquatic sciences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily visual health checks of all aquatic organisms.
  • Assist with routine aquarium cleaning, including substrate vacuuming and algae removal.
  • Conduct water quality testing (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) and maintain accurate records.
  • Prepare and administer feed to various fish species according to established protocols.
  • Support senior staff in the setup and breakdown of experimental aquatic systems.
  • Aid in the observation and documentation of fish behavior and health.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the aquatic facilities and equipment.

Required Skills

  • Strong passion for marine biology, ichthyology, or aquatic sciences.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols accurately.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in Biology, Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer experience with animals, aquariums, or laboratory settings.
  • Basic understanding of aquatic ecosystems and water chemistry principles.
