Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Urban Sustainability & Smart Cities Intern to join our Planning & Development Services team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government planning, focusing on sustainability initiatives, smart city technologies, and urban resilience strategies. The successful candidate will contribute to various projects aimed at improving Abilene’s environmental footprint, operational efficiency, and overall livability. This is an entry-level position designed for students or recent graduates eager to learn and apply their knowledge in a dynamic public sector environment. Full training and mentorship will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in research and data collection for urban sustainability projects, including renewable energy, waste management, and green infrastructure.
- Support the development and implementation of smart city initiatives, such as intelligent transportation systems, public Wi-Fi, and data-driven urban services.
- Contribute to the drafting of reports, presentations, and policy briefs related to urban planning and sustainable development.
- Participate in community engagement activities and public meetings to gather feedback and promote departmental initiatives.
- Help maintain and update departmental databases and geographic information systems (GIS) related to urban development.
- Collaborate with various city departments and external stakeholders on interdisciplinary projects.
- Perform administrative duties as needed to support the planning team.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related field.
- Strong interest in urban sustainability, smart cities, and local government.
- Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Familiarity with sustainable development principles and smart city concepts.
- Experience with data analysis and visualization tools.
- Previous volunteer or project experience related to urban planning or environmental issues.
