Job Description

The City of Columbus Department of Public Safety is seeking dedicated Emergency Call Handlers to join our vital team. In this high-impact role, you will be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emergencies, dispatching critical ambulance and fire services. This position demands quick thinking, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. This role involves shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the 24/7 nature of emergency services.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls promptly and professionally.
- Gather critical information from callers, including location, nature of the emergency, and caller's condition.
- Provide clear and concise pre-arrival instructions to callers, such as CPR guidance or bleeding control.
- Prioritize and dispatch appropriate ambulance and fire units using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all calls and dispatched units.
- Monitor emergency unit statuses and locations, providing support and relaying information as needed.
- Communicate effectively with emergency responders, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies.
- Handle high-stress situations with composure, empathy, and professionalism.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines.
Required Skills
- Exceptional verbal communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-stress, emotionally charged situations.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Proficiency in basic computer operations and data entry.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a significant asset.
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) or CPR certification.
