Job Description
Are you passionate about wildlife and conservation? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking dedicated individuals for a Trainee Wildlife Conservation Officer position. This is a unique government-funded opportunity designed for motivated candidates with no prior experience in law enforcement or wildlife management. You will receive comprehensive, hands-on training to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to protect California’s natural resources, enforce environmental laws, and engage with the community. This role offers a clear career path into wildlife law enforcement and conservation. Full training will be provided, covering everything from wildlife identification and ecological principles to law enforcement procedures and public education.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all required training programs and modules.
- Assist experienced Wildlife Conservation Officers in field operations, including patrols, investigations, and public outreach.
- Learn and apply state and federal laws related to fish and wildlife protection.
- Observe and document wildlife populations and habitat conditions.
- Support conservation efforts through various field and administrative tasks.
- Engage with the public to provide information and promote conservation awareness.
- Maintain equipment and vehicles as directed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental policies.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in various outdoor conditions and terrains.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and sound judgment.
- Valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and physical examination.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some coursework or educational background in environmental science, biology, criminal justice, or a related field.
- Volunteer experience with environmental organizations, parks, or conservation groups.
- Basic first aid and CPR certification.
