Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our Facilities team. This role is crucial for the upkeep and presentation of Ball State University’s grounds and buildings. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, from maintaining our expansive green spaces to performing minor repairs across campus facilities. This position offers term-time options, providing flexibility that aligns with academic schedules. You will play a vital role in ensuring our campus remains a pristine and functional environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, and watering of lawns and gardens.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and effectively.
- Conduct minor repairs to buildings and facilities, such as fixing doors, windows, light fixtures, and basic plumbing issues.
- Assist with the setup and teardown for campus events, including moving furniture and equipment.
- Ensure all pathways and public areas are clear of debris, snow, or ice as required.
- Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and supplies.
- Adhere to all university safety policies and procedures.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in groundskeeping or facility maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and general repair work.
- Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers).
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Prior experience in a school, college, or university setting.
- Knowledge of horticulture and plant care.
- Experience with preventative maintenance programs.
- Valid Indiana Driver's License.
