Job Description
Join the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens as a Zookeeping & Large Animal Intern. This immersive internship offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about wildlife conservation and animal care to gain hands-on experience working with a diverse collection of large animals. Interns will work alongside experienced zookeepers, learning the daily routines, husbandry practices, and behavioral enrichment techniques essential for animal welfare. This program is designed to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, preparing interns for future careers in zookeeping, animal science, or conservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist zookeepers with daily animal care routines including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring animal health and behavior.
- Prepare animal diets according to strict nutritional guidelines.
- Participate in the creation and implementation of environmental enrichment activities for large animals.
- Maintain clean and safe animal habitats and service areas.
- Observe and record animal behavior, reporting any unusual observations to senior staff.
- Assist with habitat maintenance and minor repairs.
- Learn and adhere to all safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Contribute to educational programs and public presentations as needed.
Required Skills
- Passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Conservation, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer or observational experience in an animal care setting (e.g., shelter, farm, vet clinic).
- Familiarity with basic animal husbandry principles.
- A desire for a career in zookeeping or animal management.
