Job Description

We are excited to offer a Clinical Placement opportunity for Mental Health Nursing students in Mount Isa. This placement is designed to provide you with invaluable hands-on experience in a dynamic healthcare setting, working alongside experienced mental health professionals. You will gain exposure to a diverse patient population and a variety of mental health conditions, contributing to your practical skills and theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This is a foundational learning experience for aspiring mental health nurses, offering comprehensive support and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Observe and assist qualified mental health nurses in providing direct patient care, under supervision.
  • Participate in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for individuals with mental health conditions.
  • Engage with patients to build therapeutic relationships and support their recovery journey.
  • Document patient observations, care activities, and progress accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Attend ward meetings, case conferences, and educational sessions relevant to mental health nursing.
  • Demonstrate adherence to professional standards, ethical guidelines, and NWHHS policies and procedures.
  • Actively seek feedback and engage in reflective practice to enhance learning and performance.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent program, with a mental health component.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to a career in mental health nursing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach to patient care.
  • Professionalism and a commitment to continuous learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous experience in a volunteer or support role within a healthcare setting.
  • Understanding of cultural considerations in healthcare, particularly for Indigenous communities.
